The practices of some of these laptop manufacturers are questionable. They install these “support apps” on your computer that drastically reduce the speed and capability of your system. Some, like Microsoft, have gone even further by implementing telemetry and keylogging data collection features. Microsoft has also faced criticism over privacy concerns involving recording microphone data while you arent even using the computer.
And with Windows 11, Microsoft made tens of millions of laptops obsolete by enforcing TPM 2.0 hardware requirements on devices that arguably did not need them. The result forced many companies to purchase thousands of new laptops simply to continue receiving Windows security updates.
Windows 11 has been one of the most controversial iterations in Microsoft’s history. In addition to placing ads and games like Candy Crush throughout the operating system, Microsoft has been criticized for extensive data collection practices, pushing users toward services like OneDrive, and introducing one of its most controversial features: Windows Recall.
Recall is, by far, one of the most controversial and privacy violating features ever released in tech history. In short, it captures screenshots every few seconds of everything displayed on your screen. Microsoft’s explanation is that it helps users more easily find content they were previously working on a year or so ago, but the security implications for this rarely used feature are significant. Within 24 hours of its announcement, security researchers discovered that these screenshots were stored in locations that are easily accessed by unauthorized users. Imagine logging into your banking website or entering your Social Security number on a website to fine it was exposed to malicious actors, putting your business and financial stability at risk.
Lastly, Microsoft Windows is widely regarded as one of the most frequently targeted operating systems in the world due to its massive market share and broad third-party software access. The CrowdStrike outage that occurred in 2024, where millions of companies, airlines, transportation systems, banks, and even street lights went offline with a big blue screen because a small piece of faulty code was uploaded by a Microsoft vendor brought the world to a halt.
